How can you stop a pond from losing water frequently?

We have recently made a small pond (no fish) its just a pond with a fountain but because it small, the fountain spray will blow over in the wind and cause the water level to decrease. Which means that if I don’t pay attention the pump will run dry and apparently that is bad for a pump.

Can I just put a hose into the pond and run the water just a tiny bit so that if the wind blows the water out, at least there is more water being added? It just means I don’t have to keep refilling the pond all the time.

NOTE: When our pond overflows the water meets the soil anyway so any excess water will just disappear into the soil, so whenever the hose is running a tiny dribble it wouldn’t be enough to completely flood the lawn. Plus, when it rains heavily here it overflows anyway.
It wouldn’t be a huge waste of water when its being used.

Chosen Answer:

Do an auto top off like you would do for a swamp cooler. Simply get a small line to the pond with a float that allows water in if the water level drops and turns off the water if the water level increases. Look up how to do it on a swamp cooler. You normally just add an attachment to your hose faucet that has a small line running off of it, then hook this to a float assembly on the pond fountain.

I’m not sure how your pond is exactly set up or designed, but I’m sure you can figure out some sort of auto top off system that can work with your setup using the float.

If not, there are also timers you can use to turn water on and off to the pond that can work on the same concept. A small hose attaches to the faucet but instead of a float triggering the top off of the pond off as needed you just guesstimate when it might need topped off, have the water run for a set time each day to fill the pond, and have it turn on whether the pond needs water or not.
